Because I’m a techgeek who can’t leave things alone, I decided to upgrade the firmware on my N95 mobile phone just before Christmas. The latest version seemed to have some benefits, new memory handling, faster, assisted GPS etc etc. And it was SHINY AND NEW, alright??
Sadly, I have an O2 branded phone which means I couldn’t upgrade to the Nokia software, only the O2 approved software. And they hadn’t approved a new one. But after reading up, I discovered how easy it is to change the product code on the handset so the upgrade thingy would think it wasn’t an O2 phone.
I downloaded the software to do it, changed the code, connected to the upgrade service. It told me the lastest version of the firmware was available, so I started the download.
Nothing. Got about two-thirds through and failed. Told me the connection was lost, despite it being via cable and plugged into the mains.
I had to take it to a Nokia Service Centre.
Now, bearing in mind the phone itself has no logos on it, it couldn’t be started up, the product code was generic and it didn’t have my SIM in, I assumed I’d get it fixed with the generic firmware as they couldn’t possibly tell it was an O2 one. So, I’d get the software I wanted even if it did take me a week or so.
In fact, it couldn’t be fixed at all and they’ve given me a new one. With the OLD O2 firmware on it. So I achieved very little.
Luckily there is an improvement to the maps system, which is what I wanted most.
However, the new phone had a faulty switch. So I had to take it back.
I’ll never play with my phone again. If it isn’t broken… oh, and apologies to my dad, who I shout at all the time when he tinkers which his computer and breaks it. We’re the same, me and my dad…
